Talkfood was set up by the Food Standards Agency in 2001 in response to the Government announcing a Policy Commission on Farming and Food for England. The Commission looked at the future of farming and food.

Over the next few months people told us what they wanted the Food Standards Agency to tell the Commission. You can read some of their views in the Feedback section of this website.

With the help of these comments the Food Standards Agency produced its submission to the Policy Commission.

Agency reviews food assurance scheme

The Foods Standards Agency (FSA) reviewed food logos after research showed that consumers found them confusing.

The proposal forms part of the Agency's submission to the Government's Policy Commission on Farming and Food.

Nationwide research carried out by the FSA found poor recognition of assurance scheme logos by consumers and widespread confusion over what they are supposed to stand for.

The rise of out-of-town supermarkets and the decline of corner shops mean it is often difficult to obtain fruit and vegetables in deprived neighbourhoods. These 'food deserts' are a serious threat to public health and well-being and need to be tackled head on in neighbourhood renewal initiatives.

In the UK, 14% of adults suffered from food poisoning at least once in the past year, but only one in five people reported it.

In 1980 8% of women and 6% of men in England were obese. By 1999, those figures had almost trebled to 21% of women and 18% of men. And in 1998 obesity led to an estimated 18 million sick days and 30,000 premature deaths. The NHS spends at least half a billion pounds a year treating obesity.
