Home Office uses science to fight terrorism

16 March 2010

The Home Office has invited experts in behavioural and social sciences to help combat the threat of international terrorism.

The Home Office has invited experts in behavioural and social sciences to help combat the threat of international terrorism.

This is because identifying the terrorists as they prepare, and anticipating their actions can be key factors in preventing a terrorist attack.

This is why the government published a science and technology strategy in August 2009, as part of its counter-terrorism strategy CONTEST. The science and technology strategy explains how developments in science (including social and behavioural science) can help to protect the UK.

And now, a Home Office brochure Social and behavioural science - how academia can play their part , is asking specialists in these fields to think about they can help address the security challenges we face.

Use expert knowledge

Security minister Lord West said: ‘The UK has some of the finest experts in social and behavioural research and it is essential that we use this knowledge to protect the public from those who would wish to do us harm. As terrorists seek to exploit new technologies and tactics, we are adapting and strengthening our response.’

‘We are encouraging the world of social and behavioural science to share their ideas and expertise with us to do this. Academia and industry may be able to provide invaluable assistance and advice in helping to prevent terrorist attacks.’
