Understanding overtime in the police service
This research was undertaken to provide an understanding of the drivers of police overtime and how it is managed, and to identify good practice lessons.
Data was gathered using two methods: firstly, a national survey, and secondly in-depth case study interviews in four forces. The overall context of the research is the drive towards a more efficient and effective police service.
The research informed the development of the White Paper requirements on delivering better value for money and achieving more delivery at the frontline, one component of which is the reduction on overtime spending of at least £70m by 2013/14.
