Product recall of Nando's Brand sauces

Heads of Environmental Health Services and Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware of a product recall by The Grocery Company Ltd of seven varieties of bottled Nando’s Brand sauces due to contamination of one of the ingredients with the illegal dye Sudan I.

Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.

The Products Recalled Are:

• Nando's Extra Hot Peri-Peri Sauce 125ml all Best Before End codes up to and including Dec 05.
• Nando's Hot Peri-Peri Sauce 125ml all Best Before End codes up to and including Dec 05.
• Nando's Medium Peri-Peri Sauce 125ml all Best Before End codes up to and including Dec 05.
• Nando's Garlic Peri-Peri Sauce 125ml all Best Before End codes up to and including Dec 05.
• Nando's Roasted Red Cooking Sauce 405g with the Best Before codes BBE 10/03/04, 29/05/04 to 20/06/04, 27/08/04 to 12/10/04, 03/12/04, 03/01/05, 12/05/05 to 24/05/05.
• Nando's Fresh Lemon Cooking Sauce 390g with the Best Before codes;
  BBE 22/07/04 to 31/09/04, 23/04/04, 11/06/05.
• Nando's Curry Coconut Cooking Sauce 400g with Best Before codes;
  BBE 12/07/04, 21/05/05.

No other Nando's Brand products are known to be affected.

The Grocery Company Ltd has issued a product recall notice in the national newspapers, which will appear today, 21st January 2004. A customer help line has also been established on 01257 473349.

Some batches of the following products have been identified as having a small inclusion of a non-permitted colourant within their ingredients.

Nando's Extra Hot Peri-Peri Sauce (125ml):
All product with the BBE up to and including Dec 2005.

Nando's Hot Peri-Peri Sauce (125ml):
All product with the BBE up to and including Dec 2005.

Nando's Medium Peri-Peri Sauce (125ml):
All product with the BBE up to and including Dec 2005.

Nando's Garlic Peri-Peri Sauce (125ml):
All product with BBE up to and including Dec 2005.

Nando's Curry Coconut Cooking Sauce (400g):

The presence of the colourant is minimal and only represents a threat where a considerable amount of the product has been consumed over a very short period of time.

However as a precautionary measure, and in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency guidelines, we are withdrawing the batches from sale. Any product not within the above Best Before End (BBE) dates is entirely unaffected.

If you have purchased a bottle with one of these best before dates please either return it to the store from which you purchased it and you will be given a full refund (no receipt required) or contact The Grocery Company Limited on 01257 473349 and we will arrange a refund for you.
